Der Film geht auf den Lebensabschnitt Mahlers von 1910 bis 1911 ein. Der psychisch und körperlich schwer angeschlagene Gustav Mahler konsultiert Sigmund Freud. Wegen der Affäre seiner Ehefrau Alma mit Walter Gropius fürchtet er sowohl um seine Ehe, als auch um seine Schaffenskraft und Kreativität. 1915, vier Jahre nach Mahlers Tod, heiratet Alma Mahler ihren Geliebten Walter Gropius in Wien.

Gustav Mahler gets a fervent love letter from Walter Gropius for his 20-year-old wife Alma and is terribly jealous. Badly injured, he travels to the Dutch city of Leiden in the summer to speak to the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud about the suffering of the soul. But instead of comforting, Freud drills in the wound and forces the friend to confront uncomfortable truths.
